Number wheels are used by children as a tool to learn and practice the times tables as well as to practice the numbers themselves. Engaging the hands in learning and seeing how beautiful the patterns of each number are really allows children to engage with the beauty of maths.
Used in Waldorf, Montessori and other schools these Maths Wheels can be used for all ages. Younger children who might not be ready for multiplication can make patterns, do counting and find even and odd numbers. Just having busy little hands will help to build their fine motor skills and dexterity.
If you’re using the Maths Wheel to learn multiplication tables, you’ll notice that when you pass “0” at the top, the numbers begin a new cycle — carrying an extra ten each time around.
For example, with the 3 times table:
3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21, 24, 27, 30
You start with 3, 6, 9 on the first round. Then, as you go around again, imagine adding a “10” in front — so 12 uses the 2 space, 15 uses the 5 space, and 18 uses the 8 space. On the next round, imagine adding a “20” — so 21 uses the 1 space, 24 the 4 space, and so on.
With a little practice, the pattern becomes clear — and it’s lovely to watch how numbers form natural rhythms. (There are also helpful demonstrations on YouTube if you’d like to see it in motion.)
You can use the cord that comes with the product, or yarn or even rubber bands.
