Finding the familiar rhythm of Easter

In the Northern Hemisphere, spring coincides with Easter. As the earth is renewed and brought back to life from winter’s cold, we also celebrate the returning light as the days grow longer.

Easter is the Christian celebration of Jesus’s resurrection after his crucifixion on Good Friday, marking forgiveness and a healed relationship with God. Like all celebrations, it is layered with traditions from different eras. The English name is thought to come from Ēostre, a spring goddess mentioned by the Anglo-Saxon monk Bede. In Roman mythology, spring returned each year when Proserpina came back from the underworld to visit her mother, Ceres.

Why rhythm matters

Routine is important for everyone. Knowing what to expect reduces stress, and that’s true for children as much as adults – it gives them a sense of security and helps them feel safe. When the way we celebrate changes, it can be unsettling, but it can also be an opportunity to build new traditions your children will find delight, hope and peace within.

Christians are called to be a celebratory people. Children take their cues from us: if they see you excited about telling the story of Easter and what it means to you, they’ll be excited too. They’ll feel invited into the story with you.

Ways to celebrate

  • Keep the traditions you love. Share a meal with family and friends, and go to church if that’s part of your life.
  • Go for a nature walk. In John 15–17, Jesus talks with his disciples as they walk from the Last Supper towards the Garden of Gethsemane. Time outdoors has many benefits for children, including helping them feel happier and calmer. Take a walk, sing songs that are special to you and talk about what Easter means.
  • Arts and crafts. Many children love making things, and there are endless Easter crafts to try together.
  • Above all, be present. Never underestimate how much you shape the way your children experience festivals and faith.
