Creating space for nature in our lives
As parents, we want to give our children the best, and part of that is access to nature. Here are some ideas for bringing nature into your home and life through the seasons.
1. Try forest school
Forest school is a wonderful way for children to learn about nature and gain a deeper appreciation of the environment. It gives children in Key Stage One (ages 5–7) and beyond the chance to learn outdoors through play, exploration and activity.
2. Explore outdoor learning
Outdoor learning introduces children to their natural environment through hands-on experience and encourages them to explore. It teaches ecology, geography and the importance of protecting natural habitats.
3. Make the most of seasonal holidays
Use the holidays at Christmas, Easter and through the autumn to explore outdoors. Plant seasonal flowers, or walk through a nearby woodland and notice the changes – migrating birds arriving, spring bulbs appearing.
4. Get creative with nature crafts
Use leaves, stones and twigs to make artwork, musical instruments or seasonal decorations. Nature crafts help children engage with and appreciate the beauty of the natural world.
5. Make a nature table
A nature table gives children a place to bring their treasures home and a space indoors where they can see the outside world reflected. Change the cloth colour, a picture and the treasures with each season. If you’re short of time, start small – a corner of a shelf is enough.
6. Use your garden as an outdoor classroom
Gardens are a safe, accessible place to explore. Plant flowers and vegetables, look for insects and birds, or grow herbs together.
Bringing nature into your home and life through the seasons helps children appreciate the beauty of the natural world. So why not get outside today, breathe in the fresh air and discover the wonders around you?
